Edit types and levels

The Levels of Edit defines nine edit types configured into five cumulative edit levels. We have configured these original edit types into five edit services, supplemented by indexing and standardization services. For an overview of these services, see Services.

Edit types

Edit types are categories of functions typically performed by editors:

Coordination

Make sure the project is completed to specifications (e.g. scheduling).

Policy

Make sure the document meets the basic specifications of the publisher (e.g. template usage).

Integrity

Make sure the parts of the document (e.g. figure numbering) are internally consistent.

Screening

Make sure the document meets the minimum standards for publication (e.g. spelling and grammar).

Copy Clarification

Make sure the material is typeset properly (e.g. LaTeX files converted to PDFs).

Format

Make sure the document follows the template correctly (e.g. headings, captions, cross-references, table of contents, and index).

Mechanical Style

Make sure the document follows the style guidelines of the publisher (e.g. abbreviations, capitalization, and bibliography).

Language

Make sure language is correct and used effectively (e.g. spelling, grammar, syntax, parallelism, and conciseness).

Substantive

Make sure the document is coherent (e.g. abstract and introductions accurately reflect the more detailed content) and well-organized.

These edit types can be configured into edit levels.
